This Weeks Reading: Chicana Art

For my blog post i read through this weeks assignment of reading chapter 6 of "Chicana Art" which is titled "FACE, HEART". The reading had a strong focus on "La Virgen de Guadalupe," which is the latin symbol for the Mother of Christ (Virgin Mary). As a strong catholic symbol the Virgin Mary has given inspiration to many latino/a artists as a symbol of womenly power (godlyness as the mother of christ) and power within the Catholic religion. Perez gives an example of one of the works by a female artist who depict Mary in an expressive way, also located on the blog, titled "Lupe & Sirena in Love" by Alma Lopez. Many people feel that this work insults the religion/is degrading, raising much opposition to the style of painting.
