Tunnel of Oppression

Before Reading Article
I thought the Tunnel of Oppression was very thought provoking and educational. There are somethings I think were left out and some that were put more of an emphasis on. I think that their use of imagery and sound effects was very effective in getting their point across, however, at times it was very distracting and took away from the displays they had. Overall, it was an experience that I will not forget any time soon.
After Reading Article
Goal 1: Programs are centered on the real lived experiences.
Reading goal one, I have to see that I can agree with this article on certain points of the Tunnel. They did use very extreme examples and had very theatrical props set up to promote a more emotional response from the viewers. The cases shown were on the more extreme end of the spectrum. However, I think that these experiences are real, because if they weren't then the Tunnel would not have a place to exist in the first place. Although some of the methods were extreme, it does not take away from the fact that these things do happen in the world.
Goal 2: Programs challenge the participant to examine their own behavior within appropriate social constructs.
Our experience was different than that of the article. I feel that the Tunnel did allow us to examine our own behavior. For example, in the beginning of the Tunnel, there was a Tv screen showing us all the ways consumers affect the world. There were also presentations of the ways you can hurt yourself and other by name-calling  or stereotyping.
Goal 3: Programs ultimately move an enable the participant to act to break down stereotypes and barriers between people.
Because I did not attend the discussion of the Tunnel on Thursday I can not really comment on how the Tunnel asked for us to take action. But I think that the Tunnel itself served as a guide on showing us what is wrong with the world, and then left it up to us on whether or not we should act.
