Tunnel of Oppression and article

The exhibit Tunnel of Oppression was very interesting. I thought many of the pieces there were informative. It was also interactive as with the use of the marbles and also with the lifting of flaps. It made the made the person going around interact with the exhibit which is a good thing. I liked the domestic violence piece. It was informative and at the same time interesting. I liked how they came up with the cycle of domestic violence. One piece that could have been more informative was the diamond exhibit. I remember it had cut hands on the floor below the “diamond” but I do not remember seeing the explanation of that. I think that piece should have had more explanation to it since the process of getting diamonds is not well-known to many people. Overall though, I liked the exhibit. It showed the background of some things we all have heard about but do not really know about. It made me realize that there more to certain issues that meet the eye.

Response to Article
The article, Position Statement on the Tunnel of Oppression, gave three goals programs like Tunnel of Oppression should aim for. Goal 1: Programs are centered on real lived experience. Goal 2: Programs challenge the participant to examine their own behavior within appropriate social constructs. Goal 3: Programs ultimately more the participant to act to break down stereotypes and barriers between people. In my opinion, Tunnel of Oppression meets the goals.
Goal 1: Tunnel of Oppression did give examples of real lived experiences. The issues in the exhibit are things that do happen. In human trafficking, they gave information on human trafficking happening locally. They gave two examples of people living nearby. Also in the piece about homosexuals, lesbians, and transgender, they give information of certain people dealing with this issue.
Goal 2: Tunnel of Oppression did let participants examine their own behavior. They asked questions within the exhibit and had the participants answer the question by putting in a marble in a jar. It helped the participant think and interact with the exhibit.
Goal 3: There is supposed to be a discussion about the Tunnel of Oppression which I cannot go to. But I assume there will be a discussion about what people can do to help out in these issues presented in the exhibit. I think that would be a great way to end the presentation and is the proper thing to do.
