Response paragraph after reading the tunnel of oppression position statement

Since the specifics of the position paper were not for this specific tunnel of oppression it was difficult to apply everything but I was able to apply certain aspects. As far as the three goals of the BCCC I felt as if this exhibit did a little better of applying them but still feel short.

Goal (1): Programs are centered on real life experiences
I think this exhibit did a better job of trying to do this than the exhibit the position paper did but still they didn't fulfill the goal. In the beginning of the tunnel they had real life experiences you could grab so that you have someones story to relate to. But after that they completely lost site of goal 1. Only one other exhibit gave an real life experience a person dealt with, the other just told you what was going on and expected you to truly understand. How can you understand though if you cant relate, it is human instinct to need to relate to something in order to feel real sympathy. The stereotyping of situation also really took away from this goal in our exhibit as well, eating disorders are caused by a person trying to gain control. Yet the tunnel exhibit made it seem as though it is all about fitting into the pictures of the magazines and because society tells us to be thin. While it is true we all want to look like the models in the magazines it is not the true cause of this disorder, the most common time when girl develop a eating disorder is when they have been sexually abused, at any point in their life, and they feel as if they have lost control, and this is their way of regaining it. This though I found to be almost trivial to the extreme theatrically of the heels comment. The comment that society tries and to make you seem insignificant if you don't keep up the type of heel that is in that season is a ridiculous claim that I felt took away from the oppression the media puts on the everyday person.

Goal 2: Programs challenge the participant to examine their own behavior within appropriate social constraints.
I found only one point where this goal was even attempted, and that was where there was four questions about racism. You were to ask yourself if you are racist in the things you do and if you family is racist in ways. Besides this there is no other point I felt that I was being asked about my own behavior and if it fits in with the causes of oppression in society.

Goal 3: Programs ultimately move the participant to act to break down stereotypes and barriers between people.
The only point where it seemed like they were trying to do any type of debriefing was the "I Feel..." wall and this was not sufficient to fulfill this goal. I will probably not make it to the discussion portion of the exhibit so I don't know the extent to which they will meet this goal. But, even attempting to do a discussion of the exhibit is at least an attempt at fulfilling this goal.
